The future of Florida’s defensive line room continues to look bright. After Billy Napier & Co. secured commitments on Saturday from a pair of Top247 defensive linemen in Kelby Collins and Will Norman, the Gators beat out Georgia on Sunday for another Top247 pass rusher in Kamran James.

“I’m very excited to finally have committed somewhere,” James told 247Sports. “The coaching staff [at Florida] it’s great. I have talked to all of them and then [Billy Napier]’s relationship with me is just crazy. I talk to Coach Napier all the time.”

James is one of the biggest risers in the class of 2023. He went from a relatively unknown basketball player at Orlando (Fla.) Olympia, to a top priority for many College Football Playoff contenders around the country after a junior season in which he totaled 13 sacks and 21 tackles for loss. James was also able to elevate his stock after an impressive showing on the camp circuit as he measured in at 6-foot-6.5 back in February and was able to post a 4.4 in the short shuttle.

“He’s a very selfless kid,” Olympia head coach Travis Gabriel said. “He puts his teammates before him. He wants the spotlight to be on them. He wants all those guys to get the offers and all the accolades. But sometimes he forgets about him and I always have to remind him that he’s gotta do what’s best for him. And it’s tough for him to do that, but he’s selfless. That’s just him. He’s a hard worker. He does what he’s supposed to do and he doesn’t require any maintenance.”

Sean Spencer is the UF coach that gets credit for the commitment, but he wasn’t the only one involved in the process as James has talked up his relationship in the past with graduate assistant Kail James, who works alongside Spencer.

“Everytime I’m around [Coach Chaos] he’s just bringing the energy,” James said.

“He’s [also] very energetic and he’s got great energy,” James added in regards to Kail. “It’s never a bad vibe. He’s charismatic and you can see he’s real genuine and down to earth.”

James was in Gainesville for an official visit back in early June. He also took an official visit to UGA this summer and spent some time at Cincinnati back during the winter months. In the end, however, it sounds like the people and culture at Florida are why James plans to wear the orange and blue.

“I have said this to plenty of people, but the Gators are back,” Gabriel noted. “I like what Napier does. I like his humbleness. I like his attention to detail. I like his personality and I like the staff. Coach Chaos, from Day 1, he has been up front. He’s a go getter. He understands what these kids need to get to the NFL.”

“I took my kids up there this summer for a 7-on-7 because, you know, we do that every year. And this particular year was just different than year’s prior,” Gabriel added. “When we got there, there was a coach that was with us the entire time, taking us to the fields asking us questions. I thought they were just doing that with their top recruits, but they did that for everybody.”

James is currently pegged by 247Sports as the nation’s No. 26 defensive lineman and No. 179 overall prospect. Part of his 247Sports’ scouting report can be found below.

“A long-limbed pass rusher that could eventually morph into a monster up front. He grew up playing primarily basketball before devoting more and more time to football. He has continued to juggle both sports throughout high school, but he seems to understand that he has a better chance of making more money one day as a defensive lineman than he does as a power forward. Very green from a technical standpoint, but he can win more times than not by simply being a better athlete than the person lined up across from him… he Should be viewed as a boom or burst type of prospect that could emerge as an NFL Draft pick if everything comes together. He could be molded into a variety or different things depending on the defensive scheme. However, he seems destined to be a strong-side / 4i type at the college level.”
