Interleague baseball returns to the Bronx Friday when the Chicago Cubs visit Yankee Stadium to open a three-game series with the New York Yankees.

Expect general manager Brian Cashman to spend the weekend giving the Cubs roster a good, hard look. That’s because Chicago has at least two trade chips which could be of interest to New York.

Let’s start with catcher Willson Contreras. The two-time All-Star will be a free agent after the season. And while the Cubs would like to re-sign the 30-year-old backstop, Chicago could decide to deal him before the Aug. 2 trade deadline to ensure they get something in return.

Contreras is hitting .277 with 10 home runs in 47 games this season. One of the best catchers in baseball, Contreras would be an upgrade over Kyle Higashioka, Rob Brantly and the injured Ben Rortvedt, although Jose Trevino is holding things down behind the plate and at the plate, hitting a career-best .283 in 37 games .

Then there’s David Robertson. The 37-year-old reliever has been outstanding this season for the Cubs, anchoring the bullpen with seven saves and a 1.66 ERA.

The Cubs signed Robertson in March to a one-year contract. He joined the Tampa Bay Rays last season after a successful run at the Tokyo Olympics, helping Team USA win the silver medal. Robertson made 12 appearances for the Rays, compiling a 4.50 ERA and proving he was recovered Tommy John surgery which cost him most of 2019 and all of 2020.

Robertson began his MLB career in 2008, pitching out of the bullpen and helping the Yankees win the 2009 World Series.

He left as a free agent following the 2014 season, signing a four-year, $ 46 million contract with the Chicago White Sox. But the Yankees re-acquired Robertson before the non-waiver trade deadline in 2017 as part of the deal bringing reliever Tommy Kahnle and third baseman Todd Frazier to the Bronx.

Following the 2018 season, Robertson signed a two-year, $ 23 million contract the Philadelphia Phillies, but he only pitched in seven games before going down with an arm injury. He missed all of the 2020 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
