{"id":46696,"date":"2022-08-16T05:35:43","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T05:35:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/sacheen-littlefeather-receives-formal-apology-for-mistreatment-at-1973-oscars\/"},"modified":"2022-08-16T05:35:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T05:35:43","slug":"sacheen-littlefeather-receives-formal-apology-for-mistreatment-at-1973-oscars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/sacheen-littlefeather-receives-formal-apology-for-mistreatment-at-1973-oscars\/","title":{"rendered":"Sacheen Littlefeather receives formal apology for mistreatment at 1973 Oscars"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has formally apologized to Sacheen Littlefeather for her mistreatment at the 1973 Academy Awards, where the Native American actress and civil rights activist was booed and ridiculed as she declined the Best Actor award on Marlon Brando&#8217;s behalf.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The abuse you endured because of this statement was unwarranted and unjustified,&#8221; Academy President David Rubin wrote in a &#8220;statement of reconciliation&#8221; sent to Littefeather in June, and posted on the Academy&#8217;s website Monday.  &#8220;The emotional burden you have lived through and the cost to your own career in our industry are irreparable. For too long the courage you showed has been unacknowledged. For this, we offer both our deepest apologies and our sincere admiration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Academy also acknowledged the toll the experience has taken on Littlefeather in her personal and professional life.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;As a result, Sacheen was professionally boycotted, personally harassed and attacked, and discriminated against for the last fifty years,&#8221; Rubin wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Brando had been nominated for the award for his performance in &#8220;The Godfather,&#8221; and was widely expected to win.  In a strictly timed 60-second speech at the 45th Academy Awards, which she attended at Brando&#8217;s request, Littlefeather stated that the actor &#8220;very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award, and the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry &#8230; and on television, in movie reruns, and also with <span class=\"link\">recent happenings at Wounded Knee<\/span>&#8221; <\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-youtube-video embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-video\">\n<p>\n    <iframe class=\"embed__content lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/2QUacU0I4yU?autoplay=0&amp;rel=1\" data-optanon-category=\"essential\" data-height=\"150\" data-width=\"200\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n  <\/p><figcaption><span class=\"embed__caption\"><br \/>\n      <cite>Marlon Brando&#8217;s Oscar\u00ae win for &#8220;The Godfather&#8221;<\/cite> by<br \/>\n      <cite>Oscars<\/cite> on YouTube<br \/>\n    <\/span><br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Audience members could be heard booing during her speech, and Littlefeather maintains she was even physically threatened by prominent Western movie actor John Wayne. <\/p>\n<p>In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, Littlefeather, now 75, said, &#8220;During my presentation, [Wayne] was coming towards me to forcibly take me off the stage, and he had to be restrained by six security men to prevent him from doing so.&#8221; Littlefeather also told The Guardian that people were imitating stereotypical war cries and making offensive hand gestures when she arrived backstage<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the abuse she suffered that night, Littlefeather&#8217;s status as a Native American was called into question as well, as vicious rumors circulated about her identity for years.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Hollywood Reporter, Academy Museum director and president Jacqueline Stewart visited Littlefeather&#8217;s home in June, where she read the letter aloud, presented Littlefeather with a framed copy of the apology, and recorded a video with Littlefeather for an upcoming event at the museum.  According to The Hollywood Reporter, after hearing the apology, Littlefeather said, &#8220;I never stood up onstage in 1973 for any kind of accolades.
