Huy Fong Inc., the producer of the beloved Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, is experiencing a major shortage of the product due to multiple issues. Here’s what you need to know.

Why is there a shortage of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce?

Supply chain issues since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic have caused a shortage of chili peppers needed to make the spicy Thai sauce. But issues such as severe weather conditions have also caused crops to fail and smaller harvests of peppers.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products,” the company said in a statement. “We are still endeavoring to resolve this issue that has been caused by several spiraling events, including unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest.”

How will the Sriracha shortage affect production? Will orders still be fulfilled?

The company said it would not take any new orders before September. Any orders submitted before Labor Day would be produced in the fall because of low inventory, according to CNN.

“We hope for a fruitful fall season and thank our customers for their patience and continued support during this difficult time,” Huy Fong said.

How are Sriracha fans reacting?

Sriracha fans are taking the news seriously. Several fans stocked up on the products, not unlike how some people stocked up on toilet paper at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I just ordered 3 bottles on Amazon to hold me over til the new year. Lettuce pray, ” one person tweeted in response to the anticipated shortage.

“The apocalypse has officially begun,” another Sriracha lover tweeted.

“I don’t drive, I only buy stuff on sale, and I keep my pantry well-stocked,” wrote another user. “However, inflation might get to me with the Sriracha shortage.”

“This is what fear looks like in a sriracha shortage,” someone else tweetedwith a photo of a cart full of the hot sauce.
