The Vegas Golden Knights hired Bruce Cassidy to be their next head coach, the team announced on Tuesday. Cassidy was fired by the Boston Bruins on June 6 after six seasons as their head coach.

The Golden Knights were in need of a new bench boss after the team fired Peter DeBoer on May 16. Vegas missed the playoffs for the first time in franchise history last season, going 43-31-8.

“I am excited to join an organization that shares my commitment to winning and can’t wait to get to work with the talent that has been assembled in Vegas,” Cassidy said in a statement. “It’s been impressive to watch the city embrace the Golden Knights from afar, and my family and I look forward to becoming a part of that.”

Cassidy held a 245-108-46 regular-season record with Boston and went 36-37 in the playoffs. The Bruins made it to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final on home ice in 2019, but lost 4-1 to the St. Louis Blues. That’s the only time the Bruins went further than Round 2 in the playoffs under Cassidy.

“Game 7 Stanley Cup Final, 2019, is something I’ll never forget, that we weren’t able to get the job done,” said Cassidy when asked of a memory following his firing. “Every game before that is a terrific memory in terms of that playoff run. It’s exhilarating to have that opportunity. That’s my goal: to get my name on the Stanley Cup. “

Cassidy will become Vegas’ third head coach since their initial season in 2017-18. Gerard Gallant was replaced by DeBoer in the 2018-19 season.

“The Golden Knights are very pleased to have Bruce come in to coach our team,” Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon said in a statement. “His success of him in Boston over six years is extremely impressive. His teams of lui have had a clear identity, having been among the very best in the NHL in terms of goals for, goals against, goal differential and special teams. This is the right coach for our team at this time. “

This move reunites Cassidy with Golden Knights president of hockey operations George McPhee. Cassidy was hired by McPhee (then the Washington Capitals GM) to coach the Caps starting in the 2002-03 season. Cassidy was fired 25 games into the 2003-04 season.
