{"id":54646,"date":"2022-08-24T05:53:04","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T05:53:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/unc-starting-qb-speaks-ahead-of-2022-opener\/"},"modified":"2022-08-24T05:53:04","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T05:53:04","slug":"unc-starting-qb-speaks-ahead-of-2022-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/unc-starting-qb-speaks-ahead-of-2022-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"UNC Starting QB Speaks Ahead of 2022 Opener"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">&#13;<\/p>\n<p>CHAPEL HILL, NC &#8212; On Tuesday, newly appointed North Carolina starting quarterback <b>Drake Maye<\/b> met with the media for the first time this preseason.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>UNC head coach <b><b\/><b>Mack Brown<\/b><\/b>  announced on Monday that Maye would be UNC&#8217;s starter for Saturday&#8217;s season opener vs.  Florida A&#038;M.  The decision came after a long and tight competition that began as soon as <b><b\/><b>Sam Howell<\/b><\/b>  declared for the 2022 NFL Draft, and then carried through spring practice, summer workouts and preseason camp.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>According to both Brown and offensive coordinator <b><b\/><b>Phil Longo<\/b><\/b>it was a tight competition between Maye, a 6-foot-4.5, 220-pound redshirt freshman, and sophomore <b>Jacob Criswell<\/b>.  Brown repeatedly left the door open for both quarterbacks to play on Saturday, and throughout the 2022 season.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We feel like that competition has been outstanding,&#8221; Brown said on Monday.  &#8220;Both could play&#8230; <\/span><span><span>We just felt like Drake should walk out there first.  Both of them did really well, and there&#8217;s just very little difference between the two.  If one quarterback&#8217;s not moving the ball, we&#8217;ll put the other one in.  We&#8217;ve done that in the past.  We just don&#8217;t have a plan other than \u2026 if you&#8217;re moving it, you stay in.  If you&#8217;re not, let the other guy have a chance.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Maye, a Huntersville, NC native and UNC legacy, spoke to reporters about earning the starting job, his emotions, learning from father, how he is preparing, and what is is excited about.
