CHAPEL HILL, NC — On Tuesday, newly appointed North Carolina starting quarterback Drake Maye met with the media for the first time this preseason.

UNC head coach Mack Brown announced on Monday that Maye would be UNC’s starter for Saturday’s season opener vs. Florida A&M. The decision came after a long and tight competition that began as soon as Sam Howell declared for the 2022 NFL Draft, and then carried through spring practice, summer workouts and preseason camp.

According to both Brown and offensive coordinator Phil Longoit was a tight competition between Maye, a 6-foot-4.5, 220-pound redshirt freshman, and sophomore Jacob Criswell. Brown repeatedly left the door open for both quarterbacks to play on Saturday, and throughout the 2022 season.

“We feel like that competition has been outstanding,” Brown said on Monday. “Both could play… We just felt like Drake should walk out there first. Both of them did really well, and there’s just very little difference between the two. If one quarterback’s not moving the ball, we’ll put the other one in. We’ve done that in the past. We just don’t have a plan other than … if you’re moving it, you stay in. If you’re not, let the other guy have a chance.”
