Trio of seniors named Auburn’s 2022 team captains

The latest on Robby Ashford, Auburn’s other nine transfers as season nears

Harsin announced the captains, which noticeably didn’t have a quarterback listed. He could make the call at any point this week as the Tigers begin their early game prep for the Sep 3rd season opener against Mercer. Zach Calzada, TJ Finley, and Robby Ashford are still battling for the starting quarterback position.

Members of the media got to see around 20 minutes of practice. We watched sessions 1-4, and each period lasted five minutes.

Here are AL.com’s observations and notes from Tuesday’s practice.

— Finley continues to be the first quarterback doing each drill. Ashford went second and Calzada third for the periods that media got to view.

— Period one of hand-off drills from the quarterback to the runningbacks. Finley worked a lot with Bigsby, Ashford with Jarquez Hunter, and Calzada with freshman Damari Alston. Bigsby and Hunter will be Auburn’s main tailbacks, but Alston continues to progress toward getting playing time.

— Period two was passes from the QBs to running backs. Bigsby showed the surest hands of the running back group by making several good catches. Hunter and Alston also performed well during the drill.

— Ashford’s speed popped out during the second period. He rolled out quickly and dropped a crisp pass to Bigsby, who caught the ball in stride.

Period three saw the tight ends get in motion. Shenker caught passes from each quarterback. Micah Riley-Ducker caught some nice passes from Finley. Tyler Fromm, Luke Deal, and Brandon Frazier each made nice catches during the drill.

Period four involved the wide receivers with a drill to mimic sideline catches. Camden Brown caught a ball from Calzada while tight-roping the sidelines.

The final period also had receivers catching deep passes into the end zone. Finley connected the most often with receivers during the viewing period. Ashford had a couple of overthrows but hit a nice pass to Tar’Varish Dawson for a touchdown. Calzada threw several nice passes during the session.

— Shedrick Jackson was back on the field after missing Saturday’s practice for rest. Jackson caught several passes, including a touchdown from Finley.

— Malcolm Johnson Jr, Koy Moore, Dawson, Jackson, Brown and Jay Fair are among several receivers who continue to make plays during practice.
