MIDDLETOWN, Pennsylvania — Repeated incidents of hazing involving students on a high school football team have led to the cancellation of the team’s season by the school district, reports say.

Middletown Area School District Superintendent Chelton Hunter sent a letter to parents on Wednesday informing them of the district’s decision after school officials were made aware of a video showing the hazing.

“Unfortunately, this video demonstrates that this hazing was much more widespread, and involved many more students, than we had previously known,” Hunter says in the letter.

“The kind of hazing that occurred in our facilities with this team is reprehensible. It simply cannot and will not be tolerated. We know we must work to address the culture of this team, educate our student body about hazing, and put programs in place to help us ensure that this kind of atmosphere is never allowed to exist in our school facilities.”

The hazing shown in the video took place in the school’s heat acclimation room, Hunter says. The district has turned the video over to Dauphin County police.

According to pennlive.com, it was not the first incident of hazing this season involving the football team. Two weeks ago, Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo said his office was investigating after a pair of graphic videos showing hazing surfaced online, pennlive.com reports.

The team’s coach, Scott Acri, resigned last week after the videos surfaced, according to pennlive.com. Hunter said any students involved in the hazing will face disciplinary action. He said staff members who ignored hazing also will face disciplinary action.

The team was scheduled to play its first game on Friday.
