CHAMPAIGN — During bye weeks last season, Bret Bielema and Bart Miller hit the road scouting future offensive linemen to address what were clearly short- and long-term holes on the roster. That meant hitting up junior colleges looking to get a combination of both immediate and intermediate relief at the spot. That scouting will immediately pay off.

Bielema, the Illini head coach, announced on Thursday that both junior college additions, Isaiah Adams and Zy Crisler, will start at left guard and right guard, respectively. Adams appears to have had the starting left guard spot locked up for some time, and Crisler beat Jordyn Slaughter for the starting right guard spot. Though Bielema said Slaughter will still play against Wyoming in the season opener at 3 pm Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

“I think we know how to evaluate o-linemen,” Bielema said on Thursday. “I was with Bart (Miller) and to see his length, to see the way he played, the way he can bend and move, especially Isaiah. Zy was actually playing left tackle when I saw him because we went to watch another left tackle and he jumped out to me on film and then to see him live. There’s a lot of really good things that came out of that process.”
