While playing yesterday, she was called an***er every time she served,&#8221; Pamplin&#8217;s tweet read. <\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_889E6F17-9413-DFF8-348A-E5E3F0C51268\">The incident led to an apology from BYU, the school banning a fan and Duke changing the locations of the team&#8217;s next game.  It also caught the attention of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KingJames\/status\/1563663546524876801?s=20&amp;t=ZuMfS6IkJbwCjyFk4rsBKQ\" target=\"_blank\">NBA superstar LeBron James<\/a>who tweeted: &#8220;We are a brotherhood and sisterhood! We have her back. This is not sports.&#8221; <\/div>\n<p>Richardson said both BYU officials and coaching staff were made aware of the incident during the game, &#8220;but failed to take the necessary steps to stop the unacceptable behavior and create a safe environment.&#8221;  Even after the incident was brought to their attention, Richardson said BYU officials &#8220;failed to adequately address the situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The harassment resulted in Richardson and her teammates struggling to get through the game, as opposed to just being able to focus on their play, she tweeted. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No athlete, regardless of their race should ever be subject to such hostile conditions,&#8221; Richardson&#8217;s tweet read. <\/p>\n<p>Richardson also addressed comments that she or her teammates should have refused to continue playing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--standard\">\n<div class=\"el__storyelement--standard el__article--embed\">\n<div class=\"el__article--teaseimage\"><noscript><img alt=\"Brigham Young University apologizes, bans fan over racist slurs during volleyball match\" class=\"media__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220827214839-01-brigham-young-university-athletics-apology-racial-slurs-large-169.jpg?ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Although the heckling eventually took a mental toll on me, I refused to allow it to stop me from doing what I love to do and what I came to BYU to do; which was to play volleyball,&#8221; each tweet read.  &#8220;I refused to allow those racist bigots to feel any degree of satisfaction from thinking that their comments had &#8216;gotten to me&#8217;. So, I pushed through and finished the game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite the incident, Richardson said she does not believe this was a reflection of BYU athletes.  She complimented their players on a great game and showing &#8220;nothing but respect and good sportsmanship on and off the court.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_E9930E12-A212-99AF-94EC-E5D609C4352A\">BYU Athletics did not confirm the specifics of the incident but announced they had banned a fan from all athletic venues and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BYUCougars\/status\/1563616547880329216?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\">tweeted an apology<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;When a student-athlete or a fan comes to a BYU sporting event, we expect that they will be treated with love and respect and feel safe on our campus.
