Yet some of the biggest battles surrounding the Amazon Studios series have erupted offscreen.  Middle-earth fans and scholars like Morse have clashed in online forums and dueling op-eds over this question: Does casting non-White actors enhance the new series, or is it a betrayal of Tolkien&#8217;s original vision?<\/p>\n<p>And because &#8220;Lord of the Rings&#8221; fans are notoriously opinionated about all things Middle-earth, the debate can get heated.  Some fans are even questioning if Tolkien was a racist.<\/p>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--fullwidth\">\n<div class=\"el__image--fullwidth js__image--fullwidth\">\n<div><noscript><img alt=\"Morfydd Clark plays Galadriel, a role familiar to fans of Tolkien&#39;s books or Peter Jackson&#39;s films.\" class=\"media__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220830073722-01-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-large-169.jpg?ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>Some say fantasy stories have reinforced the notion that all heroes are White men <\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_CEBF064B-E92E-EF8B-A0BB-FA058B5A96A6\">Tell Rev.  Michael Coren, author of &#8220;JRR Tolkien: The Man Who Created the Lord of the Rings,&#8221; that some people are complaining casting non-White actors in the new series will ruin the medieval world that Tolkien built, and his response is terse.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;My most intelligent response would be, that&#8217;s total bulls**t,&#8221; he says. <\/p>\n<p>Middle-earth is not history &#8212; it&#8217;s fantasy, Coren says. Critics say the fantasy and science fiction world has long normalized the notion that only White men can be the hero and in charge.<\/p>\n<p>Steve Toussaint, a Black actor who plays a wealthy naval commander in the current &#8220;Game of Thrones&#8221; prequel, &#8220;House of the Dragon,&#8221; spoke to this debate recently when he revealed he&#8217;s been haunted by White fans for being cast in the HBO series . <\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_B6FB428A-2716-AFE1-3D51-FA0677116BDF\">&#8220;They are happy with a dragon flying,&#8221; Toussaint said.  &#8220;They&#8217;re happy with white hair and violet-colored eyes. But a rich Black guy? That&#8217;s beyond the pale.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_9F830F49-9004-8503-628E-FA067712781F\">&#8220;The Rings of Power&#8221; producers cast several actors of color as major characters in the show.  One is the Latino actor Ismael Cruz C\u00f3rdova who plays the warrior elf, Arondi.  Another is Cynthia Addai-Robinson, whose mother is from Ghana and father is from the US. It&#8217;s about being faithful to Tolkien&#8217;s vision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_6E0E4CAC-A771-0794-B97B-FA3C96A41AFF\">Some point out they also have condemned the portrayals of White characters in the show, such as the elf Galadriel, who has been for being not feminine enough.<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_73D209C8-6687-4323-CB66-FA3C96AA85B4\">Louis Markos, author of &#8220;From A to Z to Middle Earth with JRR Tolkien,&#8221; says casting Black and brown actors in &#8220;The Rings of Power&#8221; threatens story believability.  He said Tolkien described elves, for example, as &#8220;fair-faced.&#8221; <\/div>\n<div class=\"el__embedded el__embedded--fullwidth\">\n<div class=\"el__image--fullwidth js__image--fullwidth\">\n<div><img class=\"media__image media__image--responsive\" alt=\"Benjamin Walker plays Gil-galad, a leader among the elves, in the &quot;The Rings of Power.&quot;\" src-mini=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-small-169.jpg\" src-xsmall=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-medium-plus-169.jpg\" src-small=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-large-169.jpg\" src-medium=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-exlarge-169.jpg\" src-large=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-super-169.jpg\" src-full16x9=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-full-169.jpg\" src-mini1x1=\"\/\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-small-11.jpg\" data-demand-load=\"not-loaded\" data-eq-pts=\"mini: 0, xsmall: 221, small: 308, medium: 461, large: 781\" bad-src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhEAAJAJEAAAAAAP\/\/\/\/\/\/\/wAAACH5BAEAAAIALAAAAAAQAAkAAAIKlI+py+0Po5yUFQA7\"\/><noscript><img alt=\"Benjamin Walker plays Gil-galad, a leader among the elves, in the &quot;The Rings of Power.&quot;\" class=\"media__image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/cdn.cnn.com\/cnnnext\/dam\/assets\/220831061601-04-amazon-series-lord-of-the-rings-large-169.jpg?ssl=1\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Casting a non-White actor to play an elf makes it more difficult for audiences to maintain their willing suspension of belief, he says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not something organic that&#8217;s coming out of Middle-earth,&#8221; Markos says of casting brown and Black actors in the show.  &#8220;This is really an agenda that is being imposed upon it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Morse, the RedState editor, said in his essay that &#8220;diversity isn&#8217;t a bad thing by itself,&#8221; but that when it becomes a major focus, the story takes a backseat to an ideological agenda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If someone created a story about a great African kingdom of old, but one of the royals was White, people would naturally find this very out of place,&#8221; Morse says.  &#8220;This would especially be an issue if the story was previously established as all characters having black skin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_1CDFED4F-ECEB-7478-2474-FA48F67DF022\">Other critics use arguments about political correctness to lodge their objections. He sees &#8220;wokeness&#8221; as a hard-left ideology that focuses on &#8220;shallow forms of identity to create victims and oppressors&#8221; and elevate a person&#8217;s race, gender or sexual identity over other issues like character. <\/p>\n<p><h3>Some see racism in the &#8216;faceless dark hordes&#8217; of Tolkien&#8217;s world<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Amazon Studios did not make anyone connected to the series available for comment.  But the show has plenty of defenders.<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_9179EA9D-C627-8080-E9ED-FA4E51CB2F65\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/20thcenturymarc\" target=\"_blank\">Marc Burrows<\/a>a critic and comedian, sees it as ironic that some Middle-earth fans have no trouble accepting giant, walking tree people and fire-breathing dragons, but &#8220;darker skinned dwarves are a bit far-fetched.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_335F3AAF-D74B-8E9C-BB5F-FA4E51D2791B\">Others say the ancient world was not as White as some &#8220;Lord of the Rings&#8221; fans believe.  They say the ancient Europe that inspired Middle Earth was filled with more racial diversity than is commonly understood due to overseas trading, conquest and migration.  Science backs them up.  The first modern Britons, who lived 10,000 years ago, were not White but had &#8220;dark to black&#8221; skin with curly hair, scientists recently discovered.<\/div>\n<p>Defenders of the series also say Amazon Studios isn&#8217;t being woke &#8212; it&#8217;s being savvy. She said they are depicted as &#8220;faceless savage dark hordes&#8221; that exist so the good guys can &#8220;gleefully go genocidal on them.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Think about that,&#8221; Jemison wrote.  &#8220;Creatures that look like people, but aren&#8217;t really. Kinda-sorta-people, who aren&#8217;t worthy of even the most basic morale considerations, like the right to exist. Only way to deal with them is to control them utterly a la slavery, or wipe them all out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><h3>Where did Tolkien stand on race?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p>Withering criticisms like Jemison&#8217;s have been aimed at Tolkien&#8217;s works for years.  The heroes in his stories tend to be White, while the villains are often depicted as snarling, darker-skinned people.  This has naturally led to speculation about the author&#8217;s views. <\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_8F772FA2-2118-5FB1-BE66-FA56593CAA96\">One essayist asked a question that&#8217;s been circulating for years: Was Tolkien really a racist?<\/div>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_26680D27-5190-E755-B023-FA55627908B0\">Some racists think so, according to John Garth, author of &#8220;The Worlds of JRR Tolkien.&#8221;<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;The extreme right has been misreading Tolkien as a representative of its own race-supremacist views for a long time,&#8221; Garth says.  &#8220;They&#8217;ve really come out of the closet in the past few years, with the rise in populism and the breakdown of taboos over what it is acceptable to say.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_F77E4C9E-948C-0142-0528-FA55627DB290\">Tolkien was a White man who lived in a tweedy, virtually all-White world as a professor of Anglo-Saxon in early to mid-20th century England.  But just as Tolkien wrote &#8220;not all those who wander are lost&#8221; about an enigmatic Middle-earth hero, his background could be deceiving. He rebuked a German publisher who asked him if he was Jewish, saying he regretted not having Jewishs.  He detested Nazi Germany, which was built on a foundation of racial and ethnic hatred (Tolkien called Hitler that &#8220;ruddy little ignoramus&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Tolkien was also a Roman Catholic in a mid-century England dominated by Protestants, and would have known what it felt like to be treated as a persecuted minority, Garth says. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was born in South Africa, and he said, &#8216;I have the hatred of apartheid in my bones,&#8217; &#8221; Garth says.<\/p>\n<p>Tolkien&#8217;s embrace of all humanity can be seen in the premise of his beloved fantasy series, says Coren, his biographer. <\/p>\n<p>The plot is propelled by the ability of different groups \u2014 elves, humans, hobbits and dwarves \u2014 to band together and see beyond their superficial differences.
