{"id":69336,"date":"2022-09-08T01:52:15","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T01:52:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/in-chiefs-new-look-offense-mahomes-says-receivers-will-come-from-everywhere\/"},"modified":"2022-09-08T01:52:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-08T01:52:15","slug":"in-chiefs-new-look-offense-mahomes-says-receivers-will-come-from-everywhere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/in-chiefs-new-look-offense-mahomes-says-receivers-will-come-from-everywhere\/","title":{"rendered":"In Chiefs&#8217; new-look offense, Mahomes says receivers will come from &#8216;everywhere&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p id=\"4COdm0\">Throughout the 2022 offseason, it&#8217;s been difficult to consume any Kansas City Chiefs news without mention of departed wide receiver Tyreek Hill.  <em>how<\/em> will the quarterback Patrick Mahomes continue to produce without his No.  1 wide receiver?  <em>Bell<\/em> he produce without him?<\/p>\n<p id=\"YRRhYF\">The real answers to these questions will begin to be revealed when the Chiefs take the field against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday afternoon \u2014 this time, without Hill, Byron Pringle, Demarcus Robinson, Darrel Williams (and others), but joined by new additions like Marquez Valdes-Scantling, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Ronald Jones and Isiah Pacheco.<\/p>\n<p id=\"q9B74B\">\u201cI&#8217;m looking forward to seeing everybody play together for a full game,\u201d head coach Andy Reid told Kansas City reporters on Wednesday.  \u201cYou just get a taste of it during preseason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"o67y7K\">Reid said that Mahomes has taken all the changes in stride.<\/p>\n<p id=\"t2ebeO\">\u201cWhen we lost the receivers that we lost,\u201d he noted, \u201che was excited, first of all, to get the new guys: Who was he going to have here?  And then to take it and run with it once we signed them \u2014 literally take them to where they lives \u2014 and get going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"hrYYod\">Reid was referring to Mahomes inviting all of his pass-catchers to Texas during the first phase of the offseason program \u2014 which turned out to be a valuable experience for all the new players.<\/p>\n<p id=\"MDbvds\">\u201cHe was very excited to get them in and get them going,\u201d recalled Reid.  \u201cAnd that&#8217;s what he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"UslBo9\"><q>\u201cAt the end of the day, we&#8217;ve got to run to get open.  And that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re doing.\u201d <strong><em>\u2014 JuJu Smith-Schuster <\/em><\/strong><\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"8KeB8F\">Thanks to that experience, Smith-Schuster said that he&#8217;s been developing chemistry with Mahomes \u2014 just like with tight end Travis Kelce \u2014 at a fast pace.<\/p>\n<p id=\"uZ1gvb\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been doing that for quite some time now,\u201d he said.  \u201cPat and Travis have their chemistry and how they do their little thing;  I&#8217;m just learning as I go.  Throughout camp and throughout OTAs \u2014 and even now, throughout the week \u2014 I&#8217;ve learned that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"yL9ia1\">The former Pittsburgh Steelers wideout says in Kansas City, it is an important skill \u2014 because Mahomes&#8217; receivers are expected to be able to improvise.<\/p>\n<p id=\"YgfqQE\">\u201cWe&#8217;re not robots,\u201d he explained.  \u201cWe&#8217;re not just running what the script says \u2014 what the little lines say.  At the end of the day, we&#8217;ve got to run to get open.  And that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"jSatmV\">His new quarterback said that&#8217;s part of the advantage of having veteran players like Valdes-Scantling, Smith-Schuster and Jones on the roster: they already know how to work with a very good, veteran quarterback.<\/p>\n<p id=\"iRNFqE\">\u201cI think the biggest thing [about players] coming from quarterbacks like that \u2014 especially when they&#8217;ve played for a long time and been great for a long time,\u201d observed the quarterback, \u201cis they understand how to do stuff the way the quarterback wants it done.  I mean, not like it&#8217;s drawn up on paper.<\/p>\n<p id=\"jJgnuh\">\u201cAll three of those guys \u2014 whenever you tell them something \u2014 they make sure to make that adjustment in their routes.  They know that&#8217;s kind of what they&#8217;ve dealt with their entire career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"QbpcmX\">According to Mahomes, that&#8217;s not something you see in every veteran receiver.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"xzVuo6\"><q>\u201cI think there&#8217;s going to be like a different player every single game that has the big game.\u201d <strong><em>\u2014 Patrick Mahomes<\/em><\/strong><\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"Jtx5u3\">\u201cSometimes when you get guys from other places, they just run the route like it&#8217;s supposed to be run,\u201d he said.  \u201cBut these guys have a great understanding of not only running the route, but understanding the coverage as they&#8217;re running it \u2014 and how it affects everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"PN9cHE\">The end result is expected to be an offense that will be extremely unpredictable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"wRKmX3\">\u201cI think there&#8217;s going to be like a different player every single game that has the big game,\u201d claimed Mahomes.  \u201cIt&#8217;s not going to be just necessarily Tyreek and Travis every single week, where it&#8217;s like one of the other is having a big game \u2014 or both.  It&#8217;s going to be every single week, it&#8217;s going to be someone different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"bV7rAd\">And then Mahomes smiled.<\/p>\n<p id=\"DUUwXK\">\u201cSo I&#8217;m sorry to all you fantasy football guys, because they&#8217;re going to come from everywhere.  So you&#8217;re going to have to choose the right guy every week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"jIS5sy\">Smith-Schuster echoed his quarterback.<\/p>\n<p id=\"Dvc8ek\">\u201cJust know that everyone&#8217;s going to be everywhere,\u201d he said.  \u201cEveryone&#8217;s going to be at every position \u2014 inside, outside, you name it.  There&#8217;s just going to be a lot of things that a lot of people are going to see in Week 1 and be, &#8216;Wow.  ARROW.  That&#8217;s what the Chiefs are.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"etxpHk\">But Reid was careful to note that like any other team in any other season, his team will continue to be a work in progress.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1RvZMC\">\u201cEvery week tells you kind of a new story,\u201d marveled the veteran coach, who is now the only head coach in NFL history to coach two different teams for at least 100 games.  \u201cAre you going to continue to progress?  Where do you plateau?  If you take some dips, how do you handle those?<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"jFYwN2\"><q>\u201cEvery year&#8217;s a little bit different in how they go about it \u2014 and you&#8217;re excited for that part.\u201d <strong><em>\u2014 Andy Reid<\/em><\/strong><\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"UKAfer\">\u201cSo that&#8217;s what seasons present you.  And you&#8217;ve got to work through all of that.  If you haven&#8217;t gone through it with some guys \u2014 or the chemistry of all the guys together, working \u2014 how&#8217;s that going to take?  Well&#8230; we&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n<p id=\"SwcU5D\">\u201cThat&#8217;s what&#8217;s so unique about it: every year&#8217;s a little bit different in how they go about it \u2014 and you&#8217;re excited for that part, to see how it all unfolds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"nELNhd\">But despite being known as a player who never misses an opportunity to remind people that he has been underrated in the press, Mahomes denied that he will enter the season being motivated by offseason rankings that placed him behind competing quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow.<\/p>\n<p id=\"WExMtp\">\u201cI think you should be motivated every year,\u201d he reminded reporters.  \u201cIn this league, everybody starts at zero.  Everybody has a chance to go out there and win the Super Bowl.  If you don&#8217;t have that motivation every single year to win the AFC West, to win the AFC and then to win the Super Bowl, then you&#8217;re in the wrong profession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"JZIDKu\">By that standard, Smith-Schuster fits right in with his new quarterback.<\/p>\n<p id=\"pRH1G8\">\u201cI came here for a reason,\u201d he insisted.  \u201cI came here to win.
