The watch had remained on sale right up to the day before the event.<\/p>\n<p>While Apple positioned the elderly model as an ultra-budget option, priced at just $199, the S3 had become something of an embarrassment in the lineup \u2026<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-discontinuation-of-apple-watch-series-3-long-overdue\">Discontinuation of Apple Watch Series 3 long overdue<\/h2>\n<p>Even when compared to the original Apple Watch SE, it compared poorly.  Features it lacked were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">40mm and 44mm sizes<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Larger display and smaller bezels<\/li>\n<li>Cellular option<\/li>\n<li>International emergency calling<\/li>\n<li>fall detection<\/li>\n<li>Noise monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Compass<\/li>\n<li>Always-on altimeter<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: initial;\">Haptic feedback from Digital Crown<\/span><\/li>\n<li>LTPO OLED<\/li>\n<li>W3 wireless chip<\/li>\n<li>Bluetooth 5.0<\/li>\n<li>Use of recycled aluminum<\/li>\n<li>Support for Family Setup<span style=\"color: initial;\"\/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That made it hard to recommend unless you <em>really<\/em> couldn&#8217;t spring for the extra $79 to buy the Apple Watch SE instead.
