Charles, 73, had been the Prince of Wales \u2014 the title reserved for future British kings-in-waiting \u2014 for longer than anyone else in the history of the United Kingdom&#8217;s monarchy.<\/p>\n<p>Buckingham Palace confirmed Thursday that the new monarch would be known as King Charles III.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,&#8221; <span class=\"link\">Charles said<\/span> in a statement.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world. From early on, the boy-who-would-be-king&#8217;s most essential duty was to find a wife and produce future heirs.<\/p>\n<p>Lady Diana Spencer seemed to be the perfect partner, though there were hints of the troubles that would come from the very beginning. As more and more photos showed them looking distant, the tabloids labeled them &#8220;The Glums.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In their very public divorce drama, Prince Charles often unwittingly played the role of villain for a voracious tabloid press.<\/p>\n<p>Asked post-split whether she thought Charles&#8217; long-time confidant and love interest Camilla Parker Bowles had been a factor in the breakdown of her relationship, Diana said: &#8220;There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded. &#8220;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-left embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/><\/svg><\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Princess Diana&#8217;s revolution<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">02:20<\/span><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When <span class=\"link\">Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in 1997<\/span>, Charles&#8217; public image was so tarnished that many wondered if he could ever become king at all. The Prince of Wales has been the patron or president of more than 400 charitable organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I find myself born into this particular position,&#8221; he once told an interviewer.  &#8220;I&#8217;m determined to make the most of it and do whatever I can to help and, I hope, leave things behind a little bit better than I found them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>The prince and the presidents <\/h2>\n<p>Prince Charles is no stranger to the corridors of power on the other side of the Atlantic.  He&#8217;s visited Washington at least 20 times, and has met every American president since Jimmy Carter.<\/p>\n<p>He met President Biden in November 2021, at the COP26 climate conference in Scotland.
