She had missed a routine screening that should have taken place about eight months into the pandemic. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was six months late this time. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had put it off longer,&#8221; she wrote, encouraging people to attend their own screenings and schedule additional tests when warranted. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>In the personal essay and on her essay and on Instagram, Couric, who is 65, shared information about the prevalence of breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them,&#8221; she wrote in a social media post shared Wednesday morning.  &#8220;As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-instagram embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyload\" data-require=\"third-party\/instagram\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CjDGexLLTpT\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; min-width:326px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Couric&#8217;s family members have battled various forms of cancer in the past, including several immediate relatives.  In 1998, the journalist&#8217;s husband Jay Monahan died from stage 4 colon cancer at age 42.
