Some of Jimmy Garoppolo’s haters seem on the verge of wearing paper bags on their heads for the rest of the season. And some seem like they might more comfortable if the 49ers quarterback did so himself.

On the heels of an 11-10 loss to the Denver Broncos that ranged from uninspired to embarrassing, a wave of well-earned critiques has rolled into the bay. One of the strangest, though, came from Brent Jones, a three-time Super Bowl winner and All-Pro in the Niners’ golden years. Jones railed against Garoppolo’s “horrible” play and “frustrating” even-keel disposition in a bizarre KNBR hit on Wednesday.

“I want to see Jimmy grabbing a couple receivers and talking to them,” Jones said. OK, fine.

“I want to see him patting his linemen on the shoulder and saying ‘I need some time.’ … I want him talking to a coach.” Duration.

“I always just see him sitting there posing and nobody is taking GQ pics on the sideline. I want to see some emotion, I want to see some quarterbacking, but they always just show him sitting there looking stoic, posing. I wanna see some messed up hair, how about that?” Secret!

Jones’ fantasy about mussing Garoppolo aside, this script has somehow dogged Garoppolo since his earliest playing time as a pro. For a surprisingly large contingent in NFL media, his reputation as a handsome face is an issue for his performance, or perhaps even evidence of a lack of toughness.

In January, 49ers GM John Lynch pointed to Garoppolo’s good looks as a potential source of the low levels of respect for the 30-year-old QB, remarking that “sometimes people are jealous when you’re good-looking and you got the world by the you-know-what.” In a sport that treasures grand displays of endurance, frequently to the point of risking the well-being of its players, Garoppolo has frequently taken potshots from former teammates and media members alike.
