It all seemed to line up perfectly for the Blue Jays fan who identified himself as Frankie Lasagna to the Associated Press. He had his glove, and he had a front-row seat in left field when Aaron Judge sent aa historic baseball flying in his direction.

But Judge’s 61st home run ball hit the wall, just below the Toronto restaurant owner’s outstretched glove, and fell into the Blue Jays bullpen, where it was retrieved by bullpen coach Matt Buschmann.

Lasgana, wearing a blue Blue Jays hat and Bo Bichette jersey, threw his arms up and then tossed his glove in disgust after missing out on the ball. He then held his left hand on his forehead as he tried to process what just happened, and later took off his hat and made a throwing motion with it in hand.

“The disbelief comes over you and just the shock and the amazement,″ Lasagna told the AP. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, I almost had it.’”

Lasagna normally wouldn’t bring a glove to a game, but he said, “In the front row I felt like you’ve got the best chance. Lo and behold, I was just a few feet away.”

Naturally, Mr. Lasagna quickly became the butt of jokes on Twitter.

There was Jimmy and Tommy and me. And there was Anthony Stabile, Angelo Sepe, Fat Andy, Frankie Lasagna, Freddy No Nose, Pete the Killer, Nicky Blanda, Mikey Franzese, and Johnny Echoes, who got that nickname because he said everything twice.

A second Blue Jays fan next to Lasagna also came close to catching the home run ball. According to the Associated Press, that fan “was distraught” after also failing to catch the ball and declined an interview request.

Buschmann handed the ball over to Yankees reliever Zack Britton, who got it over to Judge.

After tying Roger Maris’ team and American League record, Judge will attempt to break it with his 62nd home run on Friday against the Orioles at Yankee Stadium.
