Both squads will think this is a game that belongs in their pocket.

Even with its struggles to a 1-3 start, Nebraska is considered by Vegas suits to be the slight favorite at home Saturday night against an improved Indiana team, but still one trying to prove it has distance itself from last year’s 2-win squad. And unfortunately for the Huskers until proven otherwise, they occupy the space of a team foes like the Hoosiers are counting as a game they should claim in the fight for bowl eligibility.

What we don’t know is what a Mickey Joseph-led Husker team looks like after some time without the silo spinning winds surrounding his first game in charge against Oklahoma, just six days after Scott Frost’s firing. A bye week has allowed NU coaches and players to take a breath since then and to try to build confidence and try to guide players to the reset button. Also, for the Huskers to see if a new voice running the defense – Bill Busch – can bring out fast and vast improvements.

Don’t expect to see loads of new personnel. Maybe a little more Omar Brown at nickel? Maybe a little more DeShon Singleton at safety? Definitely Ethan Piper at left guard due to injury. And definitely more Gabe Ervin at running back behind Anthony Grant after the injury to Ajay Allen.

“Let me tell you about Gabe. Gabe is a high-character kid,” Joseph said of Ervin. “When things didn’t go his way he didn’t sit on our sideline and pout. He bowed his neck. He waited until he got his opportunity. And he took advantage of it, so we have a lot of confidence in Gabe. ”

The most pessimistic Husker fan will speak of concern about this squad winning another game or two. The most optimistic will at least view this three-game stretch between bye weeks (Indiana, at Rutgers, at Purdue) for Nebraska football to make this fall more than just about a coaching search.

No mistake, this is a game that can be won by Nebraska. But a few of the arrow down stats on today’s 4 UP and 4 Down need changed maybe to make it happen.
