Destiny 2

While one of Destiny 2’s claims about content vaulting is that it’s meant to help the overall performance of the game over time, as more and more is added to it, one thing that feels like it has since the Beyond Light expansion is the Tower .

Depending on your platform, you can log into the Tower, the main social hub of Destiny 2, and find it takes an interminably long time to do even the most basic of tasks, looking at your gear, changing shaders, changing transmog pieces, even bringing up the Destination map. The problem is particularly pronounced on last-gen consoles and on PC.

Now, however, Bungie has finally taken a step that seems to have practically fixed it…instantly, after two years. Yesterday, Bungie Help announced that it would be limited the total number of people in a given Tower instance to 20, until they could investigate the root of the performance issues.

But this stopgap measure has itself…more or less fixed the problem. Here’s what Tower lag looked like when I recorded it just a few weeks ago on PC:

And here’s what it looks like now.

Not perfect, and you can see a bit of lag toward the end, but way better than it was previously. So much so that I’m temped to simply declare the issue fixed, no further investigation required, and just leave the player cap in place, as that seems to have solved it by itself.

I’m not sure if there are unwelcome side effects, like capping Tower instances creates too many overall Tower instances to manage. And no, they don’t really appear to have solved the main issue, as no one can adequately explain why this was so bad on say, PC, while on my Xbox Series X there was essentially no lag, even before this new change. So I suppose it’s still worth investigating.

But for now, you should be able to log into the Tower and perform the basic functions that previously you might have fled to orbit or to the HELM to do. It’s a huge relief and I genuinely have no idea why this was not given a higher priority, as this has been plaguing the game for years, and only gotten worse over time. Maybe someone read my last article a few weeks ago? I have no idea what prompted them finally doing something, but I’m glad they did.

See you in the Tower, rather than hiding on my ship all the time now. What a relief.
