The Broncos have a big problem in the backfield.

Javonte Williams suffered a knee injury in the Broncos’ 32-23 loss to the Raiders on Sunday — one that could be serious. And considering Melvin Gordon coughed up a fumble that went for a TD — his fourth fumble in as as many games this year — Mike Boone may be the Broncos’ best running back option left.

Boone believes he can be a solution for the Broncos’ reeling backfield, for however long that is. Denver is facing a short week coming off the defeat at Allegiant Stadium as it hosts the Colts on Thursday at Empower Field.

“I feel I’ll be prepared,” Boone said. “We have a great coaching staff and (running backs coach Tyrone) Wheatley, and those guys make sure we’re prepared and ready to go out and execute.”

Still, Boone’s confidence doesn’t take the sting out of the potential impact of Williams’ injury, especially if it’s long term.

“Seeing Javonte go down, that hurt,” said quarterback Russell Wilson.

The running game went quiet in the wake of Williams’ injury on the opening play of the second half.

Williams, who was on crutches in the locker room following the defeat, will get an MRI on Monday to determine the exact severity of his injury. After he left the field, Gordon was benched in favor of Boone after the former’s costly fumble in the second quarter.

Gordon’s giveaway came on his first carry of the game. At the end of an 8-yard run, the ball popped loose from Gordon’s grasp and right into the arms of cornerback Amik Robertson, who ran it back 68 yards for a touchdown. After the game, Wilson and the Broncos backed Gordon, despite his 11th fumble in three years with Denver.

“Football is a game of mistakes,” left guard Dalton Risner said. “I’m sure people are going to be hard on Melvin Gordon, but, I mean, as an offensive line, we have a lot of things to work on, too.”

Even with Williams, the Broncos never got the run game going as they would’ve liked in a third straight loss in Sin City. Williams was bottled up to the tune of 10 rushes for 28 yards (2.8-yard average), while Boone finished with three carries for 20 yards and Gordon had three for eight.

Still, Risner believes it’s not time to sound the alarm on the Broncos’ run game, even if Williams is sidelined for an extended period.

“I’m not concerned moving forward because of the way Boone and Melvin run the ball,” Risner said. “Of course I’m going to miss Javonte, love the heck out of that dude and I need to see what’s going on with him, but I have a lot of confidence in who else we have, as well.”

The Broncos signed Boone to a two-year deal in free agency last March, a move general manager George Paton made primarily to fortify the team’s special teams.

But the signing also gave Broncos insurance at tailback behind the one-two combo of Williams and Gordon. Over three years with the Vikings from 2018-20, Boone had 71 carries for 379 yards and four TDs. He steps into a pivotal role for a Broncos offense that has sputtered with 16.5 points per game through the first four weeks.
