ATLANTA — The Braves will wake up Monday ready to clinch another NL East title. The Mets will probably wake up still wondering how this happened.

How did the Braves — who were 10 1/2 games behind the Mets in the division standings at the beginning of June and 2 1/2 games behind them just nine days ago — not only catch and overtake the Mets but sweep them in one of the most important and anticipated regular-season series between the teams in 23 years?

Atlanta beat New York in games started by vaunted Mets pitchers Jacob deGrom on Friday and Max Scherzer on Saturday to even the season series at nine games apiece. It finished the sweep with a 5-3 win Sunday night before an energized and sold-out crowd at Truist Park, wresting the tiebreaker advantage from the Mets and reducing the Braves’ magic number to one to clinch a fifth consecutive division title.

“Obviously, there was a lot riding on this series, and we set out to sweep them,” said Matt Olson, who got his 99th and 100th RBIs in the Braves’ 100th win of the season. He and Dansby Swanson became the second pair of Braves teammates to each hit a homer in every game of a three-game series — 61 years after the great Eddie Mathews and Lee Maye did so for the 1961 Milwaukee Braves.
