Welcome to Year 2 of the Hope-O-Meter, where we take the preseason temperature of every NHL fanbase and turn it into a nice little list. Stay until the end. We implore you.

The methodology is simple as ever, and it will stay as such. That is the Hope-O-Meter promise. One question: Are you optimistic about your team … or are you not?

A couple quick notes before we get to business:

• Last year, the breakdown was 73 percent hopeful, 27 percent not. This year, it’s 74/26.

• There’s one more team over the 50/50 threshold this season, up from 24 to 25.

• More than 8,300 of you voted here, which is amazing. Thank you.

• We picked one optimistic response and one pessimistic response per franchise, except in a few special cases.

• The answers were so, so, so fun to read. If you want to crack into them yourself, go for it.

1. Carolina Hurricanes — 98.53 percent optimism

Last season: 94.5 percent ↑

Optimist Corey: It feels like the Hurricanes finally have the depth of talent, from veterans to young guys, needed to truly content for the Stanley Cup — that is, if their stars can play like stars. That means Aho and Svechnikov leading a truly formidable top forward line that can score like one of the Metro division’s best, Kotkaniemi at least matching Trocheck’s production from last year, and the power play not drying up like it did in the playoffs.

Pessimist Jennifer: While we gained some good players, we lost two of our top 9 forwards and one of our top defensemen.
