Even after video of Draymond Green punching Jordan Poole leaked, Warriors coach Steve Kerr insisted it was the leak that was aberrant.

“In 32 years, I’ve probably seen 20-plus fist fights in practice,” Kerr said. “That should not make it out beyond the walls of our practice facility. And it did, and that’s a problem. We have to get better as an organization.”

“I heard people say that that happens a lot in the NBA,” Kevin Durant told ESPN in a candid interview published Thursday. “I had never seen anything like that before.”

Durant admitted that he was only referring to his experience in the league, and he was aware of Bobby Portis punching Nikola Mirotic or, more famously, Michael Jordan punching Kerr. Jordan eventually said he regretted doing that, but Kerr has long credited the incident with helping their relationship.

“It’s rare,” Durant told ESPN’s Nick Friedell. “It’s rare. I’ve been in the league 16 years, and I’ve never seen that until the other day on camera. You hear about it with MJ and you hear about it with Bobby Portis, but there’s nothing that’s happening every year. It’s very rare that something like that happens.” To be fair, Durant also told the leak, saying, “I just hate to see that be seen in the public.”

He downplayed another obvious comparison: his 2018 on-court blowup with Green. “That’s not the same situation. Somebody got punched in the face,” Durant told ESPN. “… It’s no comparison to that. … But what me and Draymond did a few years back, that s— happens all the time. So it’s easy to get through something like that, but I don’t know what this situation is like.”

Durant also praised the Warriors’ ability to maneuver through an ugly moment. “I know that group,” Durant said. “That’s a strong group, tight-knit group.”
