The day just got better for the Florida Gators, as they landed their second commitment of the day of Thursday. The latest name added to the class is the 22nd commitment for UF’s 2023 haul when Tampa (Fla.) Wharton defensive back Dijon Johnson. This is a Top100 addition to Florida’s 2023 class, and another big time addition to the haul at secondary they have added already.

Johnson backed off an early commitment to Ohio State back in the summer, and Florida had been the constant team buzzing around his recruitment ever since. He’s taken several visits to Florida since the summer, and after seeing what first year head coach Billy Napier and his staff is doing with the program, Johnson knew he wanted to be a part of it.

“Just what they do and what they got going on,” Johnson said of why Florida was the pick. “They play multiple cornerbacks on the field. I got a great chance to come in there and compete and get playing time early. I just like what Coach Napier is doing and his staff. I like that the staff is genuine people. Coach Napier is real genuine and coach [Corey] Raymond keeps it real. That was why I chose Florida.”

Florida started trending in this recruitment back in the summer after he visited campus before opening his recruitment back up. However, it was n’t until the fall when Johnson knew in his head without a doubt that he would be a Gator.

“A few days after the Utah game I thought that Florida was a place I could live at and The Swamp is a place I can play at. It’s electric and the atmosphere is like nothing else. A few days ago I really decided on it, but I had been thinking about it a lot since the Utah game.”

Numerous Florida staff members deserve credit for hauling in the Top247 defender. The main contacts for him were Coach Napier and Coach Raymond along with co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Patrick Toney. Their energy was something contagious to Johnson and after spending time around them, they won him over to help build the future of the program.

“Thew relationships I created with them over the last couple months has been great. Just talking with Coach Toney, Coach Raymond, and Coach Napier. I even talk with the strength and conditioning staff and the director of recruiting. Everyone at Florida has been hitting me up and they are just great and genuine people. I love the energy that is in their building.”

Speaking of the future of Florida’s program, it seems to be in good hands in the defensive secondary. Johnson is now the 6th addition to Florida’s class in the secondary. It was an area of major focus for the Florida staff this class as you can see, and Johnson is excited about this group and their potential to bolster the Gator defense down the road.

“I am definitely excited for the potential and the future that is going on in Gainesville. I see us taking Florida back to the top and keep getting the best DB’s and always having the best DB class.”

The last remaining target on Florida’s wish list to button up this defensive back class is five-star Cormani McClain. With his commitment now in the books, Johnson plans to join in on recruiting him to The Swamp.

“Oh yeah I am definitely going to try and reach out to him.”

The 247Sports Composite, an industry generated average, currently ranks Johnson as the Nation’s No. 96 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class.
