{"id":97155,"date":"2022-10-14T18:27:12","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T18:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/the-whale-star-brendan-fraser-apologizes-to-san-francisco\/"},"modified":"2022-10-14T18:27:12","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T18:27:12","slug":"the-whale-star-brendan-fraser-apologizes-to-san-francisco","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/harchi90.com\/the-whale-star-brendan-fraser-apologizes-to-san-francisco\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Whale&#8217; star Brendan Fraser apologizes to San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Sign up for our Remote Control newsletter to receive SFGATE&#8217;s best culture stories in your inbox every week.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brendan Fraser was in attendance at last night&#8217;s screening of the new Darren Aronofsky film \u201cThe Whale\u201d at the Mill Valley Film Festival, and he had some words of apology for the city of San Francisco and the broader Bay Area.<\/p>\n<div id=\"paywall\">\n<p>In a red carpet interview with SFGATE before the film, Fraser recounted an incident that took place during the filming of the 1997 comedy \u201cGeorge of the Jungle.\u201d  Set and filmed in San Francisco, the movie features an iconic scene showing Fraser (as George) dangling from the top of the Bay Bridge (Fraser erroneously referenced the Golden Gate Bridge, but it&#8217;s been 25 years, so we&#8217;ll give him a break ).<\/p>\n<p>        <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl --><\/p>\n<section class=\"article--content-embed inline-iframe\" data-eid=\"item-96744\">\n                        <!-- amp-exco-0cac96ac-a929-4594-a72a-1d12cb6cc155 --><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl -->            <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have almost an apology to make,&#8221; Fraser said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we were doing &#8216;George of the Jungle,&#8217; George goes to rescue a parachutist tangled in the Golden Gate Bridge. That means Disney put a mannequin hanging by a parachute from the uprights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>        <!-- hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl --><\/p>\n<section class=\"article--content-embed fullwidth youtube\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"George Of The Jungle - Story On The Bay Bridge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mClH_rspgfU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p><!-- e hearst\/article\/content\/embed.tpl -->            <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It brought traffic to a standstill on either side of the bridge,&#8221; he said.  &#8220;My trailer was on the other side in a parking lot. I just remember watching the Golden Gate Bridge. There&#8217;s this dummy parachutist hanging from it. I had the TV on, and &#8216;Oprah&#8217; got interrupted because there was a special news report with helicopters saying a parachute is dangling on the bridge. And I&#8217;m going \u2014 wait a minute, I&#8217;m looking at the helicopters and TV \u2014 somebody didn&#8217;t pull a permit, somebody&#8217;s going to get in trouble with the mayor&#8217;s office. So I can only apologize for that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>        <!-- templates\/design\/card\/default.tpl --><br \/>\n<!--\/.card--><br \/>\n<!-- e templates\/design\/card\/default.tpl -->            <\/p>\n<p>An hour later in an introduction to the screening, the Mill Valley Film Festival showed a highlight reel of Fraser&#8217;s career and presented him a lifetime achievement award for acting.  As he received a small statue, Fraser delivered a gracious thank you &#8230; then launched in a retelling of the same &#8220;George of the Jungle&#8221; anecdote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One more quick thing \u2014 I just want to make a quick apology. In &#8220;The Whale,&#8221; Fraser plays Charlie, a reclusive obese man who teaches online English courses with his webcam turned off.  Charlie, who is immobile and just days away from dying from a heart condition, attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter Ellie (played by Sadie Sink of &#8220;Stranger Things&#8221; fame).  The movie takes place entirely in Charlie&#8217;s cramped apartment, giving it the feeling of an intimate play (it was adapted from a theater production).<\/p>\n<p>The film received a six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival, and Fraser is a likely Oscar candidate for his understated and poignant portrayal of a man struggling with obesity.  After the film in a Q&#038;A, Fraser recounted the lengths he went to in order to portray the 600-pound character.  Physically, it took four hours each day to get him into the massive bodysuit.  On an emotional level, Fraser worked with the Obesity Action Coalition, an eating disorder psychiatrist and met with 10 people who had lived with various levels of obesity.<\/p>\n<p>On the verge of tears, Fraser recounted the experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They had this in common &#8230; I noticed that early in their stories, early on, there was a figure, sometimes a parent, sometimes a father, who spoke vindictively to them as children about their body weight. It set in motion a pattern that stayed with them for the rest of their lives,&#8221; he said.  Then Fraser referenced an experience he had visiting a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, where he read a plaque that said &#8220;painful indeed is vindictive speech.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I put the two together and I realized that words have consequences. What we say to one another, what we say to our children, how we speak with one another, it can do harm.
