Yankees-Guardians July 1 game postponed

CLEVELAND — Coming toward the end of a 20-game stretch without an off-day, the Yankees will receive an evening of respite on Friday, as their scheduled contest against the Guardians was postponed due to inclement weather.

The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader at Progressive Field on Saturday.

New York will send right-hander Gerrit Cole to the mound in Game 1, scheduled to begin at 12:10 pm ET. Left-hander Nestor Cortes is scheduled to pitch Game 2 at 6:10 pm Cleveland is calling up lefty Kirk McCarty as its 27th man to start Game 1, with Aaron Civale set to go in Game 2.

Cole, who will be making his 250th career start, has gone 1-1 with an 0.89 ERA over his last three starts — two against the Rays, one against the Astros — striking out 27 batters in 20 1/3 innings.

“His fastball has been really good,” manager Aaron Boone said. “For the most part, he’s putting it where he wants. When he does that, then everything can kind of work off that. He’s had at least a few of his pitches going, and when he’s got that kind of stuff, obviously he’s going to have success.”
