Cardinals QB Kyler Murray done for season with torn ACL

Arizona Cardin quarterback Kyler Murray is done for the season after he a torn ACL during the first half of a “Monday Night Football” loss to the New England Patriots, head coach Kliff Kingsbury confirmed Tuesday.

Murray went down with a non-contact injury on the first drive of the game. He tried to scramble on the third play, ran to his right, planted and fell to the turf. He was in obvious pain and stayed down as the trainers came out.

The Cardinals announced that Murray had a knee injury, and at the start of the second quarter he was ruled out of the game

Murray, the 2019 first overall pick, signed a massive five-year, $230.5 million deal with the Cardinals this past offseason.

In Week 8, he sustained a hamstring injury against the Minnesota Vikings and tweaked it again a week later.

The 25-year-old finishes his fourth season with 2,368 passing yards (66 percent completion), 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

After the Cardinals’ 1-2 start, Murray expressed the desire to run more. “I think just design right now. I’ve said I would love to implement that more but I just do what I’m asked to,” he said. This season her ran 67 times for 418 yards and three additional scores.

The team will hope to have him back for the start of the 2023-2024 season and offered him well wishes on Twitter.

Without Murray for the final four games of the season, the team will likely stick with veteran quarterback Colt McCoy, who came in for Murray on Monday night and while Murray rehabbed his hamstring.

“I don’t think I have anything to prove. I think I’ve just got to go out there and play good football,” McCoy said Monday.

“It sucks for Kyler. We’ve been together for two years. We’ve been together every day. I don’t ever want to see anything like that happen,” he added. “I know how much he cares about the game, I know how hard he works. It’s just unfortunate. I think I’ll be able to put my arm around him with this because I’ve dealt with many in my career.”

Originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2010 (85th overall), McCoy is the only remaining active quarterback from his class.

Over his three appearances this season for the Cardinals, McCoy completed 77 of 111 passing attempts for 702 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He carried 12 times for 34 yards.
