John Michael Montgomery injured in ‘serious’ bus crash

John Michael Montgomery, 57, has stated, via Facebook, that he is “recovering” alongside passengers on his bus that overturned in Jellico, Tenn on the way to a concert appearance in North Carolina.

The vocalist behind songs including 1995’s “I Can Love You Like That” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” noted, “despite some cuts and broken ribs, I am doing well. I will take some time over the next couple of weeks to heal and be back on the road soon. I am grateful to the medics and highway patrol for their quick response to this difficult situation. Thanks to everyone for their concerns.”

Suffering injuries along with Montgomery were William Salyer of Staffordsville, KY, and Marc Wood of Frankfort, KY. The singer also thanked the east Tennessee highway patrol officers and paramedics for a “quick response” to the situation. The status of Montgomery’s forthcoming tour dates included a now removed September 17 appearance in New Braunfels, Texas. Aside from that date, his forthcoming official schedule remains changed.

Tennessee Highway Patrol’s report states that Montgomery’s 2001 Prevost Featherlite bus was traveling south of Jellico on Interstate 75 when it veered off the road. It overturned after striking an embankment. Salyer was the only passenger not wearing a seatbelt.

Recently, the Danville, Kentucky native joined his son, Waker, and another Kentuckian, American Idol Season 20 winner Noah Thompson, at the Kentucky State Fairgrounds’ Texas Roadhouse Concert Stage. Montgomery’s 15-song set.

“Thank you Kentucky State Fair for a great night. Nothing better than being home and sharing the stage with [my son],” he stated.

Montgomery’s brother Eddie was half of the iconic country duo Montgomery Gentry. Ironically, his bus crash is one day after the five-year anniversary of the other half of the group, Troy Gentry, who passed away five years ago. As well, Montgomery’s daughter, Madison, is set to wed country artist Travis Denning in 2023.
