Ranking 131 college football teams after Week 5: TCU surges, Georgia still No. one

Sonny Dykes did not walk into a major rebuild at TCU. Gary Patterson did not leave the cupboard bare.

After Oklahoma and Texas, TCU has consistently recruited the third-highest-ranked classes in the Big 12. The staff just couldn’t get the most out of them anymore. Enter Dykes, who moved across town from SMU and who spent a year as a TCU analyst before that, and the Horned Frogs have an explosive team again. After a dominant 55-24 win against Oklahoma, TCU jumps to No. 14 in this week’s edition of The Athletic 131.

Dykes took the job because he knew the talent and infrastructure in place. The stadium recently expanded. TCU is third in the Big 12 in 247Sports’ Team Talent rankings. When starting quarterback Chandler Morris got injured in the opener against Colorado, the Frogs turned to Max Duggan, the previous three-year starting quarterback. One week after completing 75 percent of his passes for 278 yards at SMU, Duggan threw for 302 yards, ran for 116 yards and had five total touchdowns against the Sooners.

On Saturday, TCU had 630 yards of offense with more than a quarter to play.
