Mary Carillo and Chanda Rubin, who were broadcasting Wednesday’s US Open match between Serena Williams and Anett Kontaveit on the world feed, are under fire for seemingly misidentifying iconic singer Dionne Warwick in the crowd – instead saying she was Gladys Knight, who was also in attendance at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
“Got some more stars,” Rubin said, as the camera panned to Warwick.
“Glady Knight!” Carillo then said, to which Rubin agreed.
Rubin explained on Twitter the reason for confusing the two Black music stars.
“Too bad I was initially looking at the court (where Auntie Gladys was in the stands) and not our program monitor that showed Ms. Dionne… mistake was immediately corrected,” Rubin wrote on Twitter to one of users criticizing the mistake.
Knight and Warwick were both popular singers between the 1960s and 1980s.
